ARTPATH
offers an integrative approach to teaching the arts to children. Although
each artist brings her or his special art talents to their residency, the
theme of the work revolves around the teachers’
curriculum. Teachers ask the artist to think about his arts in areas ranging
from core curriculum subjects to skills in the social and personal context.
Each residency begins with a meeting of the artist, principal and teachers.
Teachers are given a planning form prior to this meeting, which outlines what
the teacher would like the artist to concentrate on.The artist will develop
his program using the teachers’ curriculum as a base.
At the first session the artist will provide the teacher with a complete 10
day plan of lessons. This will enable the teacher to follow the program,
participate in it and to help grow it between visits.
Schedules are also arranged between
the artist and principal at this time.ARTPATH asks that the schedule be considerate
of the artists’ time. They are paid only for the classes they teach,
not the down time between classes.
The residency is closed with a culminating event. This can be in the form
of a Gallery show or a during-school
recital, or an evening event, that decision is yours. The culminating event
showcases the work of your children with their resident artist. The culminating
event reflects the process - not a polished, finished production (not in 5
short weeks!).This is especially true for the dance and drama programs.
